TNS #756 - SQUIRM (Part II)

It’s time to wrap up all this wriggling with Part II of SQUIRM, bringing in some longer maps, the kind you really have to work through, plus another gem from the author: "I pre‑emptively apologize for the last four maps. I lost my ability to make sane decisions."

A feeling fully validated by paymentplan’s Doomworld remark about ‘a multiple‑hour brain‑wrenching Map 24’… the sort of experience that leaves you sore, exhausted, and wondering why you ever thought you could handle that much at once. It should keep the admins busy on their soundboard, mostly because they’ll be dead.

And if things get truly out of hand, we may even catch a rare sighting of our famous TNS Trudy bot slipping in from time to time… just maybe.

It’s time to SQUIRM. This week we dive into the opening stretch of this “24 extremely normal and sensibly designed” wad... or so the author claims in the readme. If you enjoy starting your night with a riddle, you’re in luck, because SQUIRM greets you with this little fever‑dream of a clue:

“It flickers in the periphery, you're keeping it there. You have been sleepwalking through a darkened dream for some time. A respite from the fire never long enough. You're still tired. Those flames an alarm you set on snooze. Fire. You've seen that color before. It's alright, you're roused by now. It's time to return to the fight.”

What does it mean? No idea. Maybe the answer reveals itself once you’ve squirmed around long enough. Maybe it’s just there to make you feel watched. Either way, join us for Part I of this week’s TNS and see how deep the wriggling goes.

After a few more maps of extended foreplay, we're about to feel the full thrust of Rusty Drill in the final stretch of the wad with very strong callbacks to the Scythe series. Complete with a run-for-your-life homage to Scythe MAP28, another to Scythe 2 MAP30 filled with 6,666 monsters and a few more surprises to boot, the grand finale sends a clear message - woe to the unprepared!

Rusty Drill is a community project in which Scythe meets modern Boom mapping and the spirit of the Scythe series permeates the entire megawad not only through plentiful homages and a subtle reference in the name itself but also via adopting its trademark map progression - starting with fast-paced, relatively easy maps and ramping up the difficulty significantly in the last episode. To add to that, the maps are designed for pistol starts so you'd be well advised to take the claim to Scythe's legacy seriously, if you don't want to be the one getting drilled!

A new Thursday dawns, and somehow we’re still knee‑deep in the depths of Pusstonia. After two weeks of poking, prodding, and generally getting far more intimate with these maps than anyone ever intended, it’s time to finish the job. Thoroughly.

This final stretch brings the last batch of 150‑monster specials: tighter, meaner, and absolutely determined to make you sweat. If Parts I and II left you feeling like you almost had things under control… don’t worry. Pusstonia has a way of reminding you who’s really in charge.
